Should I Resign From My Job Before Applying For Contract Work?

In reality yes you probably should have at least handed in your notice before applying for contract work.

There are a number of reasons for this:

1.       Many firms are looking for and expect contractors to start pretty much straight away. If you have to complete a notice period a candidate who can start immediately could be chosen over you.

2.       Many recruiters will be reluctant to put you forward for a contract if you are still employed as it can be perceived that you have not demonstrated serious enough intent.

3.       Your employer may make you an offer you cannot refuse to keep you.

A client may wait for the right candidate however unless you have a niche skill set and bring something to the role that nobody else can it’s unlikely.

If you are unsure it’s a good idea to talk to a few recruiters this will give you an idea of whether or not the skills you have are in demand and how strong the competition is.

This is also a good time to get a feel for what you are likely to be paid on a contract and if there is anything else you can do to make you stand out.

Contracting is rewarding both financially and professionally it gives you the opportunity to meet new people and work in and understand different businesses. It can also improve your work life balance. Provided you have plenty of experience, skills and qualifications you should find it a positive experience.

Good Luck
