If you’ve ever spent any time on Google searching for an Umbrella Company you will have no doubt seen endless adverts for services that advertise themselves as “HMRC Approved”.  Is this really the case, do HMRC go through and approve (and so in other words disapprove) of Umbrella Companies?

The short answer to this question is that HMRC does not approve or disapprove of any umbrella or payroll companies as they do not see it as within their remit.  However, HMRC does monitor umbrella companies among others in the contracting sector, such as agencies, to ensure that they are not promoting tax evasion or aggressive tax avoidance among their clients.
